Common Challenges

What we see in marketing organizations.

The patterns that come up in nearly every marketing engagement.

Attribution that finance trusts

Marketing attribution is notoriously contested. Building a multi-touch model with the underlying data quality to support it is harder than most platforms make it look.

Marketing-to-sales handoff friction

Leads that drop, MQLs that never get worked, the eternal marketing-sourced vs sales-sourced debate, most of this is solvable with the right workflow design.

Content velocity without sacrificing brand

Content needs keep growing. AI can raise your team’s output substantially, if the workflow, brand rules and review steps are set up first.

Marketing tech sprawl

Many marketing departments have accumulated more tools than they can maintain. Many can be consolidated, integrated, or replaced, but doing so requires intentional architecture.

Brand consistency across channels and AI content

AI content generation makes scale easy and consistency hard. Brand-voice guardrails are no longer optional.

Event and field marketing operations

Events drive significant pipeline for B2B firms. Operating them well requires real workflow, not spreadsheets.

Salesforce for Marketing

What can marketers accomplish with Salesforce?

Salesforce connects campaigns to the same customer and revenue records sales works from, which is the piece most marketing stacks lack. Marketing Cloud runs email, mobile, and journey orchestration, with Account Engagement serving B2B nurture and lead scoring. Data Cloud unifies profiles from web, product, and service data into segments marketers can activate. Campaign records in Sales Cloud tie responses to opportunities. AI features help draft copy, suggest subject lines, and build segments from plain-language prompts, while consent and preference data stays attached to each contact.

Day to Day

Marketing workflows that run in Salesforce.

Building a nurture journey

A marketer maps entry criteria, waits, decision splits, and exit rules in Marketing Cloud Journey Builder or an Account Engagement engagement program. Prospects who click a pricing email move down one branch, and those who go quiet receive educational content. When a prospect hits a scoring threshold, the journey creates a task for the assigned rep and ends.

Campaign setup and tracking

Each webinar, paid program, or trade show gets a Salesforce campaign record with member statuses such as registered, attended, and no-show. Form fills and list uploads add members automatically. Because opportunities carry campaign influence, the team can later see which programs touched deals that closed, not only which ones generated the first response.

Segment creation in Data Cloud

Instead of requesting a list export, a marketer builds a segment in Data Cloud from unified profiles: for example, customers who opened a support case recently and have a renewal approaching. The segment refreshes on its own schedule and is activated straight into Marketing Cloud or an advertising audience without a manual file transfer.

Lead scoring and handoff

Account Engagement or Marketing Cloud assigns behavioral scores for page visits, downloads, and email engagement, and grades fit against the ideal customer profile. When both cross agreed thresholds, the lead syncs to Sales Cloud, assignment rules route it to the right owner, and a status field records whether sales accepted or rejected it.

AI-assisted content drafting

Using the generative features in Marketing Cloud, a marketer requests subject line variants, body copy drafts, or a first pass at a segment definition described in plain language. Brand guidelines and a human review step stay in place. The approved variants go into an A/B test, and results inform the next send.

Measure It

What marketing leaders should track.

  • Campaign-influenced pipelineCampaign influence reports attribute open and closed opportunity value to the campaigns contacts engaged with, using the attribution model your team selects, so marketing reports revenue in the same terms as sales.
  • Lead acceptance rateLead status history shows how many marketing-qualified leads sales accepted, rejected, or left untouched, and the rejection reasons reps selected, giving both teams a shared view of lead quality.
  • Journey engagement by stepMarketing Cloud journey analytics show opens, clicks, and exits at each step, so marketers can see exactly where a nurture sequence loses people and which branch performs best.
  • Speed to first touchA report compares lead creation time with the first logged sales activity, exposing routing gaps, overloaded queues, or territories where hot leads wait too long for a response.
  • Audience growth and consentReports on contact records and preference fields track how many reachable, opted-in contacts exist per channel and segment, a figure that quietly limits every campaign plan.
Where to Start

Your first four steps.

  1. Write a shared lead lifecycleDefine every lead status from new through qualified, accepted, and recycled, and name who owns each transition. Get sales leadership to sign off. This document drives your scoring thresholds, routing rules, and reporting, and it heads off the disagreements that start when marketing and sales count leads differently.
  2. Standardize campaign naming and hierarchySet a naming convention and a parent-child campaign structure by channel, region, and program before launching more campaigns. Consistent structure is what makes influence reporting readable. Without it, even accurate attribution data turns into a long, unsortable list that nobody can summarize for leadership.
  3. Clean consent data before automationConfirm that opt-in, opt-out, and channel preference fields are accurate and synchronized between Marketing Cloud and Sales Cloud. Journeys and AI-built segments amplify whatever is in those fields. Fixing consent first protects deliverability and keeps automated sends inside the permissions your contacts actually gave.
  4. Unify profiles for one use caseStart Data Cloud with a single, valuable segment, such as current customers eligible for an upgrade, rather than ingesting every source at once. Proving value on one audience clarifies which data streams matter, how identity resolution should work, and what the marketing team will actually activate.
FAQ

Salesforce for marketing: questions.

Marketing Cloud or Account Engagement: which fits us?

They serve different motions. Account Engagement is built for B2B teams with longer sales cycles, lead scoring, and tight Sales Cloud alignment. Marketing Cloud suits high-volume, multi-channel consumer or hybrid programs with complex journeys and mobile messaging. Some organizations run both. The decision should follow your audience size, channel mix, and how closely marketing activity must connect to individual sales opportunities.

Can Salesforce show which campaigns generated revenue?

Yes, through campaign influence, which links opportunities to the campaigns their contacts engaged with. Salesforce supports first-touch, last-touch, even-split, and custom models, depending on your edition and configuration. Accuracy depends on discipline: contacts must be attached to opportunities, and campaign membership must be recorded consistently. Attribution is a data quality project as much as a reporting one, so agree on the rules before building dashboards.

What does Data Cloud add for marketers?

Data Cloud pulls customer data from many sources, including web behavior, product usage, commerce, and service history, into unified profiles. Marketers can then segment on signals that never lived in the CRM and activate those segments in journeys or advertising. It also grounds AI features in real customer context. It is most useful when a clear audience or personalization goal justifies the integration work.

How should marketing use AI inside Salesforce?

Start where the risk is low and the volume is high: drafting subject lines and copy variants, summarizing campaign performance, and building segments from plain-language descriptions. Keep brand review and legal approval in the process for anything customer-facing. AI output is only as relevant as the data it can see, so clean profiles and clear consent records matter more than the prompt.

Can a small marketing team manage Marketing Cloud?

It depends on the product mix and program complexity. Marketing Cloud offers a lot of power, and some capabilities call for technical skills such as SQL or scripting to use fully. Smaller teams often do well with a focused set of journeys and templates plus outside administrative support. Our team, with 150 Salesforce certifications across U.S.-based consultants, can provide that ongoing help.
